Introducing the D-Type Fleet: SAL Expands Its Heavy Lift Capabilities

A new class of compact yet powerful heavy lift vessels strengthens SAL’s multipurpose fleet and expands transport options for complex project cargo.

Vessel updates

As part of the ongoing growth of its fleet, SAL is introducing a new generation of heavy lift vessels – the D-Type class. Designed for versatility and efficiency, these vessels further strengthen SAL’s capabilities in transporting heavy, oversized and sensitive project cargo worldwide.

SAL will assume full ownership of five vessels of the class, while MV Industrial Diamond will operate under a long-term charter agreement.

The D-Type vessels combine compact dimensions with impressive lifting power. Measuring approximately 120 metres in length, each vessel is equipped with two 250-tonne cranes, allowing combined lifts of up to 500 tonnes.

Their compact yet highly capable design enables them to handle a wide range of heavy lift and multipurpose cargo. This makes the vessels particularly well suited for ports with limited draught or constrained infrastructure, where flexibility and efficient cargo handling are essential.

The introduction of the D-Type fleet follows more than two years of intensive project work involving technical planning, engineering and coordination across multiple teams. The vessels represent an important step in expanding SAL’s operational capabilities and strengthening its position in the global heavy lift and project cargo market.

All six vessels are scheduled to be commissioned between July and October 2025.
