Complex heavy lift operations for new berth development in India

JSI Alliance has successfully completed a major berth expansion project in Dahej, India, for client Afcons Infrastructure Limited. The project involved the transport and installation of eight jackets and 15 berthing dolphins for the construction of a new liquid cargo berth.

Using J-Class heavy lift vessel Jumbo Javelin, the structures – weighing between 500 and 600 tonnes each – were installed at an outreach of approximately 10 metres as part of a demanding 15-day installation campaign.

The operation took place in challenging conditions. The site experiences a tidal rise of up to 10 metres, resulting in currents of up to 5 knots. In addition, the seabed consists primarily of sand, requiring tailored anchoring and mooring solutions. Operations also had to be carried out alongside two live and frequently used berths, making careful planning and coordination essential.

To meet these requirements, Jumbo Javelin was equipped with a custom-designed eight-point mooring spread. Extensive engineering and preparation enabled the vessel to maintain its position during lifting operations while allowing the neighbouring berths to remain operational.

The installation campaign comprised six voyages between Dighi and Dahej. Following completion of the final component, Jumbo Javelin returned to Dighi for demobilisation, which was completed in just seven and a half days.

The project demonstrates the combination of engineering expertise, specialised heavy lift assets and operational experience available within JSI Alliance. Close cooperation between the project teams, client and suppliers was key to executing the campaign safely and efficiently under demanding site conditions.
