STS Cranes Safely Discharged in Hamburg After Complex Operation
Coordinated heavy lift operation required precise timing, tidal planning and multi-team collaboration.
Precision timing.
Complex coordination.
Three STS cranes were discharged in Hamburg under tidal constraints and coordinated multi-team operations.
The JSI Alliance has successfully completed the discharge of three Liebherr STS cranes in the Port of Hamburg, following transport from Cobh, Ireland.
The operation required detailed planning and close coordination across multiple teams to ensure safe and efficient execution.
Transporting and discharging STS cranes is a highly complex process, where every stage must be precisely aligned. Throughout the operation, specialists from Liebherr Container Cranes were on site, supporting each phase from transport to final discharge.
The main challenge was not only the voyage itself, but the discharge conditions in Hamburg. The cranes were unloaded using Mediterranean-style berthing, with the vessel positioned stern-to-quay. At the same time, traffic on the River Elbe had to be temporarily paused, while tidal conditions dictated narrow operational windows.
Each step required careful preparation – from vessel positioning and ramp installation to the removal of sea fastening and deck preparations. The limited timeframes meant that all activities had to be executed with precision and in close coordination.
The operation brought together multiple stakeholders: port authorities managing river traffic, terminal teams preparing the berth, and specialists handling SPMT operations and cargo discharge. The JSI Alliance team, together with the crew, coordinated vessel shifting, mooring and ballast operations, ensuring a smooth and controlled process on site.
Projects of this scale highlight the importance of collaboration, technical expertise and precise execution in delivering complex heavy lift operations.
